ROB WAKEMAN

Salad's drummer and also one of three songwriters was Rob Wakeman. Typically of a drummer, he was heard but rarely seen. His songs are some of Salad's most innovative, and also some of the most popular. Perhaps their biggest single, 'Drink the Elixir' was written by Wakeman, as was 'Cardboy King' and the blinding opener of 'Ice Cream', 'U.V.'

Rob joined Salad as he knew Marijne - from the house he was living in. As well as playing the drums, he arranged the samples used in Salad's songs and played keyboards in the studio. Listening to Wakeman's songs, it is easy to see that his influences are more contemporary than those of the other band members. Dance cues and samples play a part in these songs, and combined with Paul's guitar and Pete's rhythmic bass create songs which are unmistakably Rob's. These influences are confirmed by the thumping techno anthem produced by Rob for the Christmas single.

Since the split, Wakeman has been active in the techno scene. He won a techno DJ competition on Kiss FM's Colin Dale show in 1997. He released his own 12" single, named 'Run Amok' on the label, Direct Styles. The B-side is 'Mobile dog Groomer (3rd day remix)'. His second single, 'Beater Cheater' is out on abNORMAL records. The follow-up, 'Gecko' was co-written with Jo Addison and will be released soon, under the name, Lapwing and on the same label as his previous release (catalogue number abno07).
