Paul at the Mean Fiddler (1997)
Paul Kennedy
Paul Kennedy played guitar and wrote a large proportion of Salad's songs, including six of their ten singles.
His influences include the Beatles and Pixies, and he was clearly inspired by their ability to write catchy pop songs, in the classic sense of the phrase. Tunes such as Heaven can Wait and I Want You demonstrate this. Salad recorded a cover version of a Lennon/McCartney song, It's for You as a b-side for Granite Statue.
On stage, Paul could be considered as the 'other' face of Salad. Whilst Marijne was the front-person, Paul introduced many of the songs and often interjected Marijne's banter with a number of quick-witted comments. His typical song introduction would be "Yes.... and another tune.... Thank-you", delivered in a typically deadpan tone. At one particular gig at Bath University, Marijne had an on stage argument with a member of the security team because of his unwillingness to move from in front of the stage. Kennedy's sarcastic comment: "Let's have a heated debate!"
Equipment
On stage Paul used a Gibson Les Paul Studio in ebony finish, and occasionally an Epiphone Les Paul Classic. His amp was a Marshall JCM900 head coupled with a Marshall 1960a speaker cab. His FX pedals included a BOSS BF-2 Flanger and a DD-3 Digital Delay unit.
